What if food products could be designed without chemical additives?

In our daily work, one of the main focuses is the elimination of the use of potentially harmful chemicals in food processing.

We look at nature to identify those edible fruits and spices that are rich in polyphenols and combine them in synergistic systems that transpose the natural protection of plants to our food systems.

By selecting those foods that have preservative capacities, Prosur developed a product line that is considered as a food with preservative or antioxidant capacities that can be used to protect foods against food-borne pathogens and spoilage bacteria.

Prosur develops the tools to fight food waste with tastier, healthier products without controversial synthetic additives.

Power of plants

Plants have everything to shield our foods from pathogens and spoilage bacteria.

Fruits, spices, and herbs contain phenolic compounds such as simple phenols, flavones, flavanones, flavanols and flavonoids that have antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory capacities, and some even show anticarcinogenic or cardioprotective properties.

Dietary polyphenols are a family of more than 8000 different organic compounds that can be found in the most common foods such as fruits, spices, vegetables, coffee, wine, tea or chocolate. These compounds play an important role in protecting the plant from external threats such as oxidative stress, UV irradiation, toxic metals, pests and infections, or the recovery from injuries.

Using traditional non-selective extraction methods and gentle drying procedures, we assure that our fruit and spice extracts keep all the properties of the original raw material. With the power of nature we are able to address all aspects of food safety and preservation.

Food in Food

Protect Food with Food. Prosur builds upon an ancient history of preserving food with vinegar and provides producers with a natural shelf life enhancing solution that offers freshness, flavor, and premium quality. Our philosophy is simple: Get it Natural.

One of the oldest methods of natural preservation is pickling food with vinegar. Also, the use of spices and herbs helped to enhance shelf life naturally.

Nowadays, conventional methods of shelf-life enhancers are based on synthetic additives to ensure food safety and shelf life, but they are not all harmless.

Driven by a heightened focus on food and its impact on their health and immunity, more and more consumers look for minimally processed products without these artificial preservatives and antioxidants.

Prosur therefore went back to square one and looked at the old techniques through modern spectacles to use this garden of natural ingredients and design natural shelf life enhancing solutions that maintain color, freshness, flavor, and premium quality with a genuine and natural ingredient list that meets modern consumer needs.

Sustainability

Farm to fork

At the heart of the EU’s Green Deal, lies the Farm to Fork strategy that together with the Biodiversity strategy aims to create a new and better balance of nature, food systems and biodiversity. The goal is to build a healthy and sustainable food system and to put biodiversity loss to a stop.

At Prosur, we decode nature to develop natural food innovations that can help to transform the food chain in a way that is fair and healthy for both people and planet, highlighting consumers’ increasing demand for less processed products that are produced in a sustainable way.

The Healthier and Tastier Choice

In 2017, one out of five deaths in the European Union were related to unhealthy diets. Healthier, balanced diets reduce the risks of life-threatening diseases and cancers.

By offering natural food protection solutions and complete systems to create tastier plant-based alternatives, Prosur facilitates the shift to more healthy, sustainable diets full of flavor.

Being invested deeply in the subject, Prosur actively supports the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) in their fight against diseases such colorectal cancer.

Food Waste

Did you know the carbon footprint of food waste is greater than that of the airline industry?

The exact causes of food waste are manifold but 58% are related to shelf-life problems.

As an innovative biotech company, we have found our own way to tackle this problem. By boosting the shelf life in a natural way, resources and production costs are reduced to produce the food we eat.

Battling food waste is not only vital to the welfare of our planet, people, and animals, it is also vital to our own business.

Nature and its best are the main sources of our products, fundamental for our daily work; its protection is part of our corporate DNA.

By working together with our customers to keep food products longer fresh, we can stop wasting food; save money; and help save our planet.

Tackling climate change

We are not only working for the present, but we are also investing in the future. Climate change is taking center stage and impacts all areas of our lives, including the sustainability of our business. It is our corporate responsibility to continuously reduce our carbon footprint, as even small actions can have a big environmental impact.

Our commitment with climate change goes beyond the impact our products can have on the food chain. It encompasses also how those products are produced. Prosur introduced low carbon manufacturing as a millennium development goal back in 2016. Continuously identifying and quantifying the carbon footprint of our operation is key to reduce it.
The reduction was “22,76% of the average of the intensity of emissions in the three-year period 2018-2020 with respect to the triennium 2017-2019, for the scope 1 + 2”. Investments in renewable energy such as the installation of a solar panel roof has help us reduce even further by 2021.

To further offset our carbon footprint, we collaborate with the Spanish Association for the Restoration of the Forest (ARBA). We actively support the regional reforestation initiative PROYECTO BALUARTE. The main goal of this project is to restore about 5.5 hectares of coastal land property of the Spanish Navy  into a biodiverse habitat by attempting to reproduce the original forest that existed before human activity.

Increase organic farming

It is time to reshape tomorrow. To respond to the increasing demand for organic, sustainable, and local foods, Prosur is investing exponentially in the development of an organic range of its products. All our organic products are certified by CAERM based on Article 29(1) of Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 and of Regulation (EC) No 889/2008. Our operator number is MU-5436/EI. Under the US-EU Organic Equivalency Arrangement, our organic certification is recognized as well in the US.
